Spectrum

2017

'Spectrum' extends the artist's ongoing investigation into binaries and their impact on society, specifically in relation to gender and sexuality. Coombs researched the site and theme in tandem while devloping this work. The result is text installed directly into the landscape to highlight extremes and offer moments of thought designed to provoke contemplation in relation to the literal and metaphorical interpretations: the birds and the bees as a metaphor for reproduction used by parents to explain to children where babies come from; romantic relationships; western society's ongoing struggle with alternative genders and sexualities; the effects of colonisation; and the impact of weather and climate change to the surrounding land.
